Lactation Center
Sutter Women's Services
Breastfeeding offers babies the best possible start by bonding mother and newborn, providing the ideal nutrition, and strengthening a baby's immune system against common illnesses, such as diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. Breastfeeding is also known to protect against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), juvenile diabetes and childhood cancers. Breastfeeding has also been shown to protect women against breast and ovarian cancer, anemia and osteoporosis.
The Sutter Health Regional Lactation Program provides comprehensive counseling, education support and supplies that enhance a woman's ability to breastfeed her baby. The program will be available through each hospital in the Sacramento Sierra region with four separate components to the program:
- Inpatient Lactation Support
- Outpatient Lactation Support
- Warm Line - The lactation consultants are available by phone to answer non-emergency questions
- Breastfeeding Supply Center: Sutter Lactation Station
- Education on technique for all women who wish to breastfeed
- Concerns from earlier problems with breastfeeding
- Multiple babies and premature babies
- Infant confusion, i.e., difficulty latching on, suckling or swallowing
- Baby's failure to gain weight
- Mother's production of milk
- Nipple cracking or soreness
- Woman's return to work or school
- Physical challenges with mother or child that make breastfeeding difficult
INPATIENT SERVICES: Available by appointment, a certified lactation consultant visits new mothers who have questions or concerns about breastfeeding, providing information on techniques and answering questions.
OUTPATIENT:After leaving the hospital, appointments are available with certified lactation consultants to handle problems that may develop, provide instruction on the use of breast pumps, and help develop strategies for breastfeeding when returning to work or school.
WARM LINE: The lactation consultants are available by phone to answer non-emergency questions.
BREASTFEEDING SUPPLY CENTER: The retail store provides mothers with a good selection of breast pumps for sale and rent. In addition to traditional supplies, the store offers the only outlet for specialized breastfeeding aids in the Sacramento region, including aids for babies with cleft palate and gift items such as pillows to assist in breastfeeding twins. Items carried are recommended by certified lactation consultants and the medical advisory panel.
