Sutter Memorial Hospital, part of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, was one of the first maternity hospitals in the state. It is now home to the most advanced maternal and neonatal care units in the region. The hospital has the largest program for caring for high risk pregnancies in Northern California. Approximately 15% of all pregnancies require specialized maternal or neonatal care. The nurses and specialists at Sutter Memorial Hospital are available 24 hours a day to meet the needs of pregnant women and their newborns.

Preconception/Prenatal Services

Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetic specialists provide comprehensive preconception counseling, genetic counseling, nuchal translucency measurements, prenatal diagnosis ( amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling) , detailed ultrasound examination, in utero fetal therapy as well as high risk pregnancy consultation and management.

The Preconception/Prenatal Services program provided through Sutter Memorial Hospital offers care for women with diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions that may affect theirs or their baby's health. The maternal-fetal program also provides care for mothers whose babies show signs of genetic disorders or other difficulties.

Physicians in maternal-fetal medicine have completed several years of additional training to earn board certification in this highly specialized field. With the help of an expert staff, the physicians provide diagnosis and care for each woman during the birth of her child.

In addition, a team of obstetric anesthesiologists and neonatologists available on site supports the maternal-fetal specialists and staff 24 hours a day. These specialists are supported by more than 50 pediatric subspecialists, nursing experts and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to ensure that each newborn receives complete and immediate care at the highest level available in the region. Transport services staffed by a specially trained team brings at-risk mothers and newborns to Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento from hospitals in a 23-county area.

While the Preconception/Prenatal Services program is based at Sutter Memorial Hospital, for the convenience of expecting mothers, ongoing monitoring and care is available at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, Sutter Davis Hospital and Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
