    Jenny - Alternative Birth Experience

    Jenny -
    Jenny - Alternative Birth Experience

My first experience with the birthing tubs at Sutter Davis Hospital was when I was in labor with my first child, now two years old. I was having a difficult time coping with the transition, or final, stage of labor and the nurse who was working with us suggested that the tub might help. I hadn't planned on trying the tub and was a bit skeptical about how much it could help, but as soon as I got in the water I was amazed to discover how much relief the warm water provided. It was just what I needed to help me get to the point where I was ready to deliver.

When it came time to deliver my second child, Samantha, I knew I definitely wanted to use the tub again. Almost as soon as I arrived at the hospital I was able to get in the tub; and this time I was also able to use a birthing ball to lean on in the tub. Again, I was amazed at how much my body relaxed once I got in the water. I truly felt like I could work through the pain much more effectively that way. Additionally, the water pressure from a flexible shower nozzle that one of my labor coaches could hold over my lower back was a huge help in dealing with some back labor.

I wasn't planning on a water birth, but when it came time to push I ended up staying in the tub, as it was much more comfortable for me there rather than in the bed, and the doctor was happy to do the delivery there. At that point my husband was able to get on his swim trunks and get in the tub with me to support me while pushing. It was a special experience to deliver Samantha in the tub. And, just as I'd heard, it did seem to ease the transition for her from the womb to the outside world.

I feel privileged to have been able to use the birthing tubs at Sutter Davis Hospital for both of my labor and delivery experiences, and if we have any more children I definitely would like to use the tub again. For anyone that's thinking of using the tub during labor and/or delivery, I would highly recommend it.
