Sutter Transplant Services makes it as easy as possible for physicians to refer patients for kidney-pancreas transplants. The following criteria are used as a basis for selection into the program:

• Diagnosis as an end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patient who has irreversible kidney failure and/or diagnosis as type 1 diabetes mellitus



• Should have a lower urinary tract which does not preclude the ability to establish and maintain external urinary conduit



• Should have acceptable pulmonary system, liver and gastrointestinal function



• Absence of active hepatitis or hepatitis B surface antigen positive



• Absence of active infections



• Absence of cancer within the past two years (non-melanotic skin cancer excluded)



• Absence of HIV, AIDS, and/or AIDS-Related Complex



• Absence of recreational drug use
