The Organ Donation Process
Sutter Transplant and Outpatient Heart Specialty Clinics
Kidneys for transplantation come from three sources: living donors who are relatives, living donors who are not related and someone who donates a kidney upon his or her death. While the easiest matches tend to come from living relatives, patients who receive kidneys from other living donors or from someone who has died enjoy good success. The generally accepted survival rates for the three groups are as follows:
| Graft Survival | |||
| 1 Year | 5 Year | ||
| A. | Living Related Donor | 90-95% | 80% |
| B. | Living Non-Related Donor | 80-85% | 70% |
| C. | Cadaver | 80-85% | 70% |
If you are considering donating a kidney, please see the donor section of this website. Kidney donations from other donors are handled through the United Network of Organ Sharing.
