Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute is widely recognized for outstanding outcomes in patient care. In 2000, Sutter Memorial, home of the Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute, was the only Sacramento-area hospital recognized for excellence in coronary artery-bypass graft (CABG) surgery by the California CABG Mortality Reporting Program, a joint program of the Pacific Business Group on Health and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). This rating signifies that patients in the program had a better-than-expected survival rate when undergoing coronary artery-bypass graft surgery.

    Setting the Standard
Since its inception in 1956, Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute has been a leader in pioneering innovative approaches to heart health care. Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute was the first hospital in the Greater Sacramento area to perform a heart transplant. Dr. Edward Smeloff, one of the institute's original founders, developed and implanted the first of his innovative artificial heart valves at Sutter. The Smeloff-Cutter valve, also known as the Sutter valve, helped more than 40,000 patients worldwide before being replaced by newer valves.
