Sutter orthopedic surgeons have a long history of active involvement in physician-initiated research and clinical trials. The news-making Robodoc developed by Sutter orthopedic surgeon William Bargar, M.D. and debuted at Sutter General Hospital in 1992 set the stage for the revolution in computer-assisted surgery devices taking place in all areas of surgery. Sutter orthopedic surgeons have long remained at the forefront of their field by taking part in clinical trials of new medications and medical devices. In addition, Sutter physicians have initiated research to understand surgery-related pain and determine ways to improve patient recovery.

Research studies are conducted through the Sutter Institute for Medical Research, which provides assistance that enables practicing physicians to take part in advancing their field.
