Rehabilitation
Sutter Orthopaedic Institute
While rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) are often the first line of treatment for joint, muscle, ligament, tendon or bone damage, physical therapy alone or in combination with surgical care can play a critical role in regaining full use of the body. Many Sutter orthopedic surgeons place their patients on a physical therapy regimen before determining whether surgery is the right approach to care. Reducing a patient's weight, increasing flexibility and improving muscle strength can often correct the problem without surgery. When surgery is required, rehabilitation through physical therapy is a vital step in returning to maximum mobility, flexibility and strength.
At Sutter, we take the patient-driven side of orthopedic care very seriously by providing conveniently located rehabilitation centers [link to list of centers] near each hospital and throughout the surrounding region. In addition, because studies clearly show that early mobilization following orthopedic surgery improves long-term results, patients typically begin a modest rehabilitation program while still in the hospital or shortly following outpatient surgery. Early rehabilitation can prevent scar tissue formation, improve blood flow to the affected area, and increase bone strength to enable better, faster and more complete recoveries.
For patients requiring extensive or longer inpatient rehabilitation care, Sutter provides an inpatient rehabilitation unit for acute rehabilitation at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital and a skilled nursing rehabilitation facility at Sutter Oaks Midtown. Many orthopedic patients also receive rehabilitation care at home through rehabilitation therapy provided by Sutter Visiting Nurses Association.
Across all needs and through all stages of care, Sutter provides outstanding rehabilitation services to ensure each patient achieves the greatest success possible.
