In addition, because studies clearly show that early mobilization following orthopedic surgery improves long-term results, patients typically begin a modest rehabilitation program while still in the hospital or shortly following outpatient surgery. Early rehabilitation can prevent scar tissue formation, improve blood flow to the affected area, and increase bone strength to enable better, faster and more complete recoveries.

For patients requiring extensive or longer inpatient rehabilitation care, Sutter provides an inpatient rehabilitation unit for acute rehabilitation at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital and a skilled nursing rehabilitation facility at Sutter Oaks Midtown. Many orthopedic patients also receive rehabilitation care at home through rehabilitation therapy provided by Sutter Visiting Nurses Association.
