    Sutter Orthopaedic Institute

In collaboration with the Sutter Center for Health Professions, Sutter Orthopaedic Institute implemented a Learning Center at the Gateway Oaks. This Center features a classroom equipped with state-of-the-art video conference and telemedicine technologies where physicians can view surgical procedures, presentations and other clinical information, using video, audio and data services.

"Sutter Orthopaedic Institute has developed one of the largest Joint Replacement Centers in the region with the most comprehensive team of orthopaedic and joint disease specialists," said Harold Strauch, M.D., and medical director of SOI. "As we continue our legacy of progress, we have created the Learning Center as the next step in our ongoing commitment to advancement and excellence."

Orthopaedic surgeons Thomas Blumenfeld, M.D., and William Bargar, M.D., provided instruction for the first computer aided surgical procedure classes in September for other physicians from the greater Sacramento and Central Valley areas. As the two surgeons performed joint replacement surgery in Sutter General Hospital"s operating rooms, a group of physicians in the Learning Center viewed the surgeries in "real-time" and listened to both surgeons as they performed their surgical procedures.

In addition to the Learning Center video conferencing services, health professionals also can access five Clinical Training Rooms that are equipped with video and audio technologies. Participants watch an instructor on a television monitor as they perform mock procedures in class.

The Learning Center will hold training seminars throughout the year to provide a variety of classes for health professionals that will include joint replacement surgery, trauma surgery, and hands-on workshops. As the program grows, teaching staff will include faculty from across the country.

Future plans for the Learning Center include linking the video conference and telemedicine technologies to other Sutter Health affiliates and external partners.
