One of the most common approaches to providing patients relief from pain is injecting anesthetic or cortisone into the area of back pain. Though the relief is only temporary, injections often provide a much-needed break from chronic pain, sometimes allowing healing to take place, other times giving the patient and spine surgeon time to determine a more lasting treatment approach.

For further information, see our Healthwise health information sections on anesthetic or corticosteroid injections for low back pain and corticosteroid injections for spinal stenosis corticosteroids (intra-articular) for osteoarthritis and corticosteroids for a herniated disc.
