Just as a brace may be used to stabilize legjoints, special instruments such as rods, screws and cages may be surgically placed at strategic locations along the spine to provide additional support. Instruments may be inserted temporarily until the patient's bones grow into place, or they may be placed permanently to ensure on going support.
