Sutter offers discectomy (also see miocrodiscectomy) as a surgical procedure to treat persistent symptoms and prevent further nerve damage caused by a herniated disc. Your surgeon carefully removes a small part of the spinal disc that is causing pain or other symptoms that cannot be relieved through noninvasive techniques. Discectomies can be performed on the neck (cervical), upper back (thoracic) or lower back (lumbar) regions. A fairly common procedure, discectomy surgery has a high success rate for long-term relief.

Depending on the extent of surgery required, Sutter offers this procedure on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

For more information, see discectomy or microdiscectomy for a herniated disc in our health information section.
