Corpectomy, also known as decompression surgery, is done to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots of the spine. The surgeon uses special procedures to remove bone, disc or other tissue compressing nerves and causing nerve damage, pain and other symptoms. Depending on what is causing the nerve compression, this surgery may involve discectomy to remove pieces of disc, laminectomy and/or foraminotomy to remove pieces of bone and arthrodesis to stabilize the spine.
