Arthrodesis (Spinal Fusion)
Sutter Spine Services
When conditions require surgeons to stabilize and strengthen the spine to align bones and prevent harmful movement, they may perform arthrodesis, or spinal fusion. During arthrodesis, surgeons replace damaged disc material with bone grafts that join adjacent vertebrae. Arthrodesis may be performed alone or as one component of your surgical operation. Also see interbody fusion.
Conditions treated with arthrodesis include spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis or scoliosis. To learn more about arthrodesis (spinal fusion), please see spinal fusion (arthrodesis), cervical spinal fusion and spinal fusion for scoliosis.
