Diagnostics and Treatments
Sutter Neuroscience Institute
Identifying the exact condition is the most important factor in treating and managing memory and cognitive disorders. Many conditions have similar features, and pinpointing requires a specialist experienced in cognitive disorders. In addition to the diagnostic and treatment modalities listed below, Sutter Neuroscience Institute has launched a new Memory Clinic (link to new memory clinic page).
Diagnostics
In order to diagnose a disorder and start a treatment plan, a neurologist will provide a comprehensive evaluation, including:
- A complete review of the patient's medical history.
- A neurological examination.
- An assessment of cognition and behavior.
- Additional neuropsychological testing.
- Appropriate additional laboratory tests, electrophysiologic studies, CT, MRI, and PET brain-imaging.
Treatment Options
Our multidisciplinary team work together with each patient to identify the best treatment plan, which may include trying a variety of treatment options, including:
- Cognitive enhancing medications.
- Medical treatments for behavioral symptoms.
- Nutrition advice
- Treatment of medical causes of cognitive-behavioral symptoms.
- Review and adjustment of the patient's complete list of medications which may have cognitive side-effects.
- Voluntary enrollment in investigational studies of the latest medical therapies (for example, new treatments for Alzheimer's disease). Â Learn more about currently enrolling trials through Sutter Institute for Medical Research.
SNI has launched a new clinic dedicated to memory and aging and is currently accepting new patients. Learn more about the new clinic
One of the ways we are able to continually invest in new technology and launch special programs like the Memory Clinic is through donations. Visit our Foundation’s web site if you are looking for a way to support your favorite Sutter Health program.
