Research and Clinical Trials
Sutter Comprehensive Epilepsy Program
Epilepsy research is advancing rapidly, providing doctors with more information about epilepsy, new antiepileptic medications with fewer side effects, innovative medical devices that may reduce or eliminate seizures, and less invasive surgical treatments. Sutter’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program includes nationally prominent research physicians who are actively involved in scientific research and clinical trials.
Program physicians are active in the larger epilepsy research arena, working with the National Science Foundation, Center for Biophotonics and other collaborative efforts. In 2002, neurosurgeon Edie E. Zusman, M.D., F.A.C.S., collaborated with UCLA neurosurgeon Linda M. Liau, M.D., Ph.D., to found the Bob Holm Donor Tissue Bank. The tissue bank contains specimens of brain tumor and epileptic tissue that is used in current studies and preserved for future research. As biotechnical and genetic research continues to become more refined, providing insight into the underlying composition of cells, the tissue bank will provide researchers with a valuable resource for their studies.
