Cognitive Neurology is the study of brain disorders which affect behavior, thinking, attention, memory, language, and visual-spatial function.

Evaluation
In order to diagnose a disorder and start a treatment plan, a neurologist will provide a comprehensive evaluation, including:

  • A complete review of the patient's medical history.
  • A neurological examination.
  • An assessment of cognition and behavior.
  • Additional neuropsychological testing.
  • Appropriate additional laboratory tests, electrophysiologic studies, CT, MRI, and PET brain-imaging.

Treatment Options
Our multidiscliplinary team work together with each patient to identify the best treatment plan, which may include trying a variety of treatment options, including:

  • Cognitive enhancing medications.
  • Medical treatments for behavioral symptoms.
  • Treatment of medical causes of cognitive-behavioral symptoms.
  • Review and adjustment of the patient's complete list of medications which may have cognitive side-effects.
  • Voluntary enrollment in investigational studies of the latest medical therapies (for example, new treatments for Alzheimer's disease). Sutter Institute for Medical Research
