Conventional and complementary practitioners alike acknowledge the importance of a healthful diet. Many health problems in our society can be avoided or treated using dietary adjustments. These include the "diseases of affluence" such as obesity and coronary artery disease, as well as some forms of cancer.

Although the use of supplements such as vitamins and minerals in the treatment of disorders not recognized as classic nutrient deficiencies is a newer field, many supplements may be used safely under the guidance of a skilled nutritionist.
