Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of health care that combines the use of medicinal herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, massage, and therapeutic movements. Most practitioners of TCM take a preventive approach, and include patient education as part of the therapeutic process. The philosophies of TCM differ in many respects from that of conventional Western medicine. For example, TCM practitioners view the body as a reflection of the natural world, see most conditions in terms of balance of opposites (yin and yang, hot and cold), recognize an important vital life force in the body called Qi(pronounced "chee"), and conceptualize the organ systems based upon the Qi flow through them. TCM has proven effective for many conditions, including chronic degenerative diseases, allergies, heart disease, infectious diseases, heart disease, and AIDS.
