DEXA (or DXA) Bone Density Scan

Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is considered the most accurate way to measure bone mineral density to determine stages of osteoporosis and its precursor osteopenia (bone thinning).
The DEXA scan passes two X-ray beams through the body and measures the amount of beamĀ blocked by bone and soft tissue. Because dense bones block more of the beam, the machine can produce a score indicating bone density. In general, DEXA scans are recommended for women age 65 and older, but doctors refer younger women and men who are at risk due to personal or family medical histories.
If your doctor refers you for DEXA scan, we encourage you to read the comprehensive explanation on DEXA Scan in our Health Information Library. The section includes why DEXA Scans are done, how to prepare, what to expect and what the test results will show.

We hope this information helps you gain a better understanding of DEXA scans and encourage you to talk to your doctor about any questions or concerns you have about the test.
