3D Mammography - Digital Breast Tomosynthesis

3D Mammography, or Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, employs three dimensional imaging which produces digitally reconstructed breast images. It is used in conjunction with 2D Mammography for improved cancer detection and is especially useful for women with dense breast tissue. The improved accuracy of a 3D Mammogram is proven to increase the detection rate of early breast cancer and may reduce the number of false-positive exams.

With 3D Mammography, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then digitally reconstructed to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices.  This process allows radiologists to identify and characterize individual structures within the breast without the confusion of overlapping tissue.
