Assistance for Uninsured and Low-Income Uninsured Patients
How do I determine whether I qualify for Financial Assistance for my hospital medical bills?
The hospitals within Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region have offered generous charity care policies for generations, and we continue to make great strides in improving the health and well-being of people in our communities. We offer Financial Assistance to our low-income and uninsured patients who meet the program eligibility requirements. Please refer to the chart for the family income eligibility criteria.
We are advocates for our low-income and uninsured patients by encouraging them to apply for government assistance programs. We have financial counselors available to assist patients in exploring options to pay their bill or to set up payment plans. Signage in English and Spanish is posted in the hospital registration area and Emergency Department to provide patients who don’t have insurance with information on what to do. Following discharge from the hospital, patients are provided itemized bills and follow-up letters, and are encouraged to apply for assistance programs.
If your income is below 200% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines you may qualify for 100% Charity Care for your hospital bill. If your income is between 200% to 400% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines you may qualify for partial Charity Care. Catastrophic Medical coverage is available for low income uninsured patients whose eligible medical bills exceed 30% of the patient's annual family income. The Admitting//Business Services Department will begin the eligibility determination process once they have received a completed application form, and you have provided your income verification documents.
