In keeping with our commitment to children's health, the Sutter Children's Center offers the largest pediatric cancer treatment program in the region. Provided in conjunction with Sutter Cancer Center, the program offers area families the opportunity to work with leading cancer and blood disease specialists who work exclusively with children.

Patients with cancer and blood diseases such as leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia and thalassemia most often receive treatment through a combination of inpatient and outpatient services. The outpatient clinic provides diagnostic services and ongoing treatment and monitoring, while more complex procedures and concentrated care are provided on an inpatient basis. Each child's treatment is carefully coordinated and monitored through our pediatric hematology/oncology subspecialists.

The multidisciplinary team of care providers includes:

  • Board-certified pediatric oncologists/hematologists
  • Pediatric clinical nurse specialists
  • Pediatric nurse practitioners
  • Child Life Specialists
  • Pediatric nutritionists
  • Pediatric nurse clinicians
  • Clinical social workers
  • Medical technicians
  • Pediatric rehabilitation specialists, as needed

At Sutter, we give utmost care to treating each child as an individual with his or her unique approach to illness and treatment. In addition to medical treatment plans, each child and family is cared for by Child Life Specialists and social workers who provide information, answer questions and stay by the child and family's side to provide emotional support.

Our pediatric hematologists/oncologists are:

Yi Sheng Lee, M.D., Ph.D.
Saunders HSU, M.D.
Yung Yim, M.D.
Nora Wu, M.D.

Because childhood cancers are extremely rare, we encourage each family to participate in the research programs sponsored by Sutter Cancer Center and Children's Oncology Group. Classes and Support Groups are available for children and their families. Referrals to community agencies and resources are also provided. For more information about the Hematology/Oncology Program for Children and Adolescents, call (916) 733-1757.
