Sutter provides ongoing services to children who have received care in the Special Care Nursery to ensure each child continues to develop to his or her full potential. Children from birth through age 3 who are at risk for developmental delays due to premature birth or life-threatening illness as a newborn receive care from a team under the medical direction of a neonatologist. The interdisciplinary team consists of the following members:

  • Developmental pediatrician

  • Pediatric nurse practitioner

  • Pediatric physical therapist

  • Pediatric occupational therapist

  • Clinical psychologist

  • Clinical social worker

  • Ophthamologist, as indicated

  • Audiologist, as indicated
Visits to the clinic will occur three to four times during the first two years of life. These visits allow healthcare professionals to monitor your child's progress and to suggest services that may help your child achieve normal growth and development.

Your child's visits to the clinic will include:
  • A developmental evaluation using the Bayley Scales. This is a standardized assessment that assesses the child's mental (play) and motor (movement) skills. It is a more detailed and thorough assessment than the Denver Developmental, which is the screening instrument most often used in the physician's office.

  • A visit with the social worker to determine how your family is coping with the new child and to address any needs you may have.

  • Parental guidance on ways to promote your child's developmental skills.

  • A composite report of your child's visit that will be mailed to you and your child's physician.

  • Referrals to community programs, agencies and consultants, as needed.

  • A physical therapist has special training on evalutating the motor skill development of infants and young children. The physical therapist will assess your child at the first visit.

  • The clinical psychologist has additional training in evaluating a child's cognitive ability. The psychologist evaluates your child using the Bayley Scales at the second and third visits.
More information about the special health concerns of premature infants and other conditions that could lead to care in the neonatal intensive care unit is available in the Children's Health section of our health information.
