Neonatal Intensive Care Units

Sutter is proud of its reputation as the place to go to have a baby. While the majority of pregnancies follow a natural course to the joyful delivery of a healthy baby, your choice of Sutter offers access to a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Program with two locations.
Sacramento NICU
Since 1974, the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento is Northern California’s largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with neonatal specialists available for newborns that require specialized care. The 55-bed nursery is supported by eight board-certified neonatologists, more than 75 neonatal and pediatric subspecialists and more than 150 nurses, many of whom are certified in Advanced Life Support.
Roseville NICU
Opened in 2008 as an extension of the Sacramento NICU, the 16-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sutter Roseville Medical Center offers families in Placer County and surrounding areas the convenience of care closer to home. The Roseville NICU is supported by the same team of board-certified neonatologists, and a staff of registered nurses with specialty training in the care of the critically ill newborns.
Patient and Family Centered Care
Both of our locations are designed to provide family centered care, in which the new mother and father are welcomed into the unit to participate in the treatment plan of their newborn. Families whose children have received care in NICU hold fond memories of the dedication of the staff that provide care. The staff develops equally strong bonds to the babies and families with whom they share this special, but difficult, life experience. Each year, the reunion of graduates from the nursery gathers staff and families back together to celebrate life.
Advanced Life Saving
Our NICU is proud of a higher-than-expected survival rate for newborns, made possible in part by sophisticated equipment that includes extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and inhaled nitric oxide therapies. In addition, our team of sub-specialists provides emergent surgery on newborns and we offer a High Risk Infant Follow Up (HRIF) to ensure infants have the support they need to ensure a healthy start.
Team
Behind every infant and family we serve is a corps of more than 250 medical professionals working in
unison to deliver care to the highest standards. Members of the team include neonatologists, nurses, pediatric sub-specialists, case managers, lactation consultants and child-life specialists.
