How long have you been with Sutter Children’s Center?
I joined Sutter Children's Center on July 1, 2009. I decided to join because it was a large, well-supported, fully integrated children’s hospital. I’ve been here for almost three years now and am grateful for the opportunity to be part of an amazing group of physicians, nurse, social workers, perfusionists, therapists, administrative personnel and so many other professionals who provide excellent care to our kids on a daily basis.
Why did you choose to go into pediatric CV surgery?
I started cardiac surgery residency at Loma Linda University thinking that I might want to pursue congenital heart surgery. My determination strengthened when I was fortunate to work under and be mentored by Dr. Leonard Bailey, a pioneer in the field of infant heart surgery. Throughout my training, Dr. Bailey helped me to grow both personally and professionally. He taught me to appreciate the beauty of congenital heart surgery and showed me how emotionally rewarding our field was and is. He always would say that congenital heart surgery is very joyful as long as every step is done perfectly well.
What is most fulfilling about your job?
The impact of operations conducted by our team has the potential to affect a child's entire lifespan. Thus, the results of my work have implications and the potential to be realized not just months or years later, but for decades. It is an awesome responsibility that I take very seriously and find most fulfilling. A successful operation with precise repair will likely be translated into rapid recovery and the potential for lifelong normal cardiac function. This is why my job is extremely rewarding.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?
When not at work, I enjoy playing, laughing, and learning with my two daughters and wife. I also consider my co-workers to be part of my family, so I try to spend time with them and their families outside the work environment. I try to make up for "quantity" with "quality" time as much as possible.
