In 2001, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento equipped a telemedicine suite to reach out to physicians and families separated by distance who need the highly specialized services available at Sutter Children's Center, Sacramento. Telemedicine enables physicians in rural locations to consult with pediatric subspecialists without putting children and their families through the time, stress and financial hardship of travel.

The suite uses a camera, high-resolution monitor, computer and fiber-optic cable to send and receive video transmissions to patients in 23 Northern California counties who rely on Sutter's specialized services. Instead of driving for hours, particularly in inclement weather, young patients can go to a local clinic outfitted with telemedicine equipment. An ideal alternative for dermatologic and other visual conditions, telemedicine can also be used to provide former patients with follow-up visits.
