With the exception of skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in American men. In 2005, more than 230,000 men will receive a prostate cancer diagnosis, with the vast majority expected to be treated and cured. Treatment success is largely due to increasing awareness and excellent screening methods that detect prostate cancer at its earlier and most curable stages.

Sutter's network of primary and specialty care physicians provides the full range of screening tests available. When prostate cancer is suspected or confirmed, Sutter Cancer Centers offer extensive diagnosis and advanced treatment options, including prostate seed therapy offered at the Roseville center and the da Vinci® system robot-assisted surgery available in Sacramento. Both centers provide Consultative Tumor Conference review for more advanced cases. The conference is made up of doctors representing multiple specialties who combine their expertise to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient.

Sutter doctors are active in research to find better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat prostate cancer. Sutter Cancer Center, Sacramento is one of 400 sites selected to participate in the largest-ever prostate cancer prevention trial. Launched in 2001 and coordinated by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) will determine if these two dietary supplements can protect against prostate cancer. In addition, patients may have access to leading-edge medical advances by participating in research studies and clinical trials.

Beyond medical care, Sutter Cancer Centers also support each patient with an array of services, classes and support groups designed to help patients and families deal with the emotional stress of cancer. Information on these programs is available in the Support for Patients and Families section.

For more information, see the prostate cancer and advanced or metastatic prostate cancer topics in our Health Information section. Additional information is also available from the National Cancer Institute www.cancer.gov and the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org.
