Head and Neck Cancers
Information by Cancer Type
There are a number of cancers that develop in the head and neck, including cancers of the mouth, lips, throat, nasal passages and salivary glands. Carcinomas are the most common cancers, though lymphomas and sarcomas may also develop in the tissues and glands. Scientists estimate smoking and smokeless tobacco products are responsible for 85 percent of all cancer found in the head and neck (excluding brain cancers). Combining alcohol with tobacco products increases the risk even more.
Treatment success, which includes maintaining normal function and appearance, depends on early detection and treatment by doctors experienced in the care of head and neck cancers. At Sutter Cancer Centers, highly qualified cancer, surgery, radiology, nuclear medicine and other specialists bring the latest advances in medical treatment. Patients with head and neck cancers have the added assurance of receiving personalized treatment plans designed through a Consultative Tumor Conference of experts from multiple specialties. These specialists combine extensive experience and skill to create a treatment program designed to meet the needs of each patient.
Sutter Cancer Centers also support each patient with an array of services, classes and support groups designed to help patients and families deal with the emotional stress of cancer. Information on these programs is available in the Support for Patients and Families section.
