    Colorectal Cancer
    Information by Cancer Type

Cancer of the colon and rectum (colorectal cancer) is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women. Thanks to improved screening measures, colorectal cancer is one of the easiest cancers to diagnose early. The most common screening tests include digital rectal examinations, fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, and double contrast barium enemas. The American Cancer Society has produced an informative video called "Get Tested for Colon Cancer: Here's How" on colon cancer screening that you can download and view.

Recently, research has shown that a new technique called virtual colonoscopy appears to be as effective as a traditional colonoscopy in detecting colon cancer. Virtual colonoscopies are available through Sutter Cancer Centers and offer a minimally invasive approach using CT scanning and a high-powered computer to create two- and three-dimensional images of the interior of the colon.

Once colorectal cancer is confirmed, comprehensive treatment is available through Sutter Cancer Centers. The centers offer the full range of services, including review by Consultative Tumor Conference made up of doctors representing multiple specialties who combine their expertise to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient.

For in-depth information about all aspects of colorectal cancer, visit the colorectal cancer section of our Health Information Library. Additional information is also available from the National Cancer Institute www.cancer.gov and the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org.
