    Our Team
    Blood & Marrow Transplant

The program's medical director is Michael Carroll, M.D. Dr. Carroll has been involved in thousands of transplants through out his career. He is a blood-related cancer and blood and marrow transplantation specialist committed to providing patients with the finest integrated, comprehensive therapy for acute leukemia, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphoma (including Hodgkin's disease), chronic lymphocytic leukemia, myeloproliferative diseases, aplastic anemia and germ cell tumors.

Dr. Carroll received his medical degree from Stanford University and came to Sutter Medical Group – Hematology & Oncology after serving as Director of the Clinical Leukemia Program and member of the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at the University of Arizona, Arizona Cancer Center, where he also served as Assistant Professor of Medicine. Prior to that, Dr. Carroll founded and directed the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX. Additionally he was an active staff member of the Bone Marrow Transplant Division at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Department of Oncology and an Assistant Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Oncology, following fellowship training at that institution.

Throughout his career, Dr. Carroll has been actively involved in research of treatments for blood malignancies and bone marrow failure states and has published numerous studies in the field. He plans to continue pursuing research at Sutter, providing patients access to the latest advances in care.

Dr. Carroll's medical office is located in a building next to the hospital's BMT unit.

The Sutter Cancer Center Blood and Marrow Transplant program is also made up of a multi-disciplinary team of experts including nurse coordinators, dieticians, social workers, pharmacists, and transplant-educated inpatient staff. The team receives additional support from Sutter Health's full complement of specialists available to provide care as needed.

    Clinical Dietitian
Adequate nutrition is vital to your recovery. The dietitians will meet with you before and during your transplant to try to meet your dietary needs. The dietitian will work with you to provide foods that are appetizing and appealing so you will eat proper amounts of calories and protein.

After the transplant, if you are having problems with eating you may continue to see our dietitian, free of charge, on an outpatient basis with a referral from your physician.

    Social Worker
Because the transplant procedure can be an emotionally trying experience, a social worker will meet with you and your family before the transplant to help you recognize any needs and to provide support throughout the transplant process. You will see the social worker regularly during your hospital stay. After transplant, if you have a need, you may see one of our social workers, free of charge, on an outpatient basis.

The Blood and Marrow Transplant program's staff is made up of dedicated, compassionate people, each bringing a special expertise to the team.

    Chaplain
The transplant procedure may be a spiritually trying and enriching experience. If you wish, a chaplain will meet with you during your transplant to discuss you and your family's spiritual needs.

    Physical Therapist
Exercise is an important element of your treatment. Someone from the department of physical therapy will talk with you on admission. Then, a physical therapist will design an individual exercise program to help you maintain strength and endurance during your hospital stay. This program may include lifting light weights, using a stationary bicycle and performing low impact endurance activities. The therapist will visit you regularly to monitor your progress.
