    PROVENGE Immunotherapy for Prostate Cancer
Sutter Cancer Center Treatments & Services

Sutter Cancer Center, Sacramento is among the first sites in the nation to treat advanced prostate cancer patients with PROVENGE® (sipuleucel-T), the first in a new therapeutic class known as autologous cellular immunotherapies. PROVENGE was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of men with asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic castrate resistant (hormone refractory) prostate cancer.

    How does PROVENGE work?

PROVENGE is designed to stimulate a patient’s immune system to target prostate cancer cells. The process of making PROVENGE involves the introduction of a patient’s immune cells to a protein that functions as a prostate-cancer associated antigen. An antigen is a substance that causes the body to react with an immune response. This process activates the patient’s immune cells against prostate cancer cells to help the immune system better fight the disease.

    Administration for Prostate Cancer

A complete course of PROVENGE is three infusions, typically administered approximately two weeks apart.

Are you a Candidate for PROVENGE Immunotherapy?

You may be able to receive PROVENGE therapy if all the following are true:

    • You are on hormone therapy and have rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA)A protein made by the prostate gland and by prostate cancer. A test for PSA is often used to screen for prostate cancer and to monitor some treatments for the disease. levels
    • Your doctor has confirmed that your cancer has spread from the prostate to other places, such as your bones
    • You are not taking narcotics for cancer-related pain
