Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Diagnostic Procedures
When placed within a magnetic chamber, different types of body tissue respond to radio signals by emitting signal responses at distinct intensities that can be picked up and captured in digital images. These magnetic resonance images (MRIs) show the structure of the area being studied, including the size, form and location of tumors. MRI capabilities allow doctors to look within the body, without performing surgery, to help diagnose cancer or determine whether a treatment is reducing or eliminating targeted tumors.
Magnetic resonance imaging using the latest equipment is available through Sutter Cancer Centers. For patient convenience, MRI tests are also available at Sutter Davis and Sutter Auburn Faith Hospitals and other sites throughout the greater Sacramento region. Your doctor will refer you to the location best suited to your needs.
For more information on MRIs, see the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) topic in our Health Information sections. Additional information is available from the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov), including a special section on cancer imaging at imaging.cancer.gov.
